Witch’s Legacy.
Golden Ray of Light, the cave born male gold basked in the warmth of the late afternoon sunshine, the trees below the cave where he and the many other dragons resided, were a rainbow of yellow, orange, and red, the pine and fir trees still bearing there green needles.
It was good to enjoy the sun, soon enough it would be cold, winter was coming, though still young he had heard of winter from others -and the cold crisp mornings and evenings seemed to hint what was coming.
Since he had grown up he had mated with a few of the dragons in the cave but none really interested him, he actually wanted someone special, a mate to call his own and it wasn’t really his fault that he could not find the right girl in spite of the numerous females to be had.
Gimodaptor, the short mint dragon chuckled wryly, ‘ I may have been given a male’s name but that didn’t seem to scare away Sterling Sunshine the silver, we make a good team.’
Sterling Sunshine nuzzled his mate with his nose ‘ I like her green colour it is very, soothing, and Ray, I believe you like I need to find a mate that compliments you and your colours.’
Ray, shook his head, and blew out a puff of air out of his nostrils ‘Look, it’s not just colour that I’m after though the cave has a variety of females to pick from - pink, purple, red, storm, stone, puddle, vines, pebbles blacks…I’m looking for something more, I’ll know it when I find it.’
Gimodaptor grunted, ‘The one who tends us sets great stock by the fact you are a Cave born gold very hard to come by. She will be expecting eggs from a breeding or think you are a dud, there are few enough males in this cave.’ She puffed herself up, ‘ I don’t mind that she gave me a male name, though I wish she waited to see what gender I was before giving me that. I would have told her if she had just asked!’
Ray laughed and flicked his tail in amusement, ‘ But she said she named you after another dragon one of her mind - one who has a special place in her heart. Maybe that is what I need a dragon that can hold a special place in my heart.’
Ray knew until he found what he was looking for, it was unlikely that he’d produce an egg with a female, his heart wasn’t in it. He decided instead of thinking of such thoughts, to enjoy the day by going out to fly in the sun.
Golden Ray still had not produced any children when, weeks later a black egg was brought into the cave - another warrior dragon, this one picked up off the abandoned page.
The hatchling was born soon enough with proper care, she was a feisty black showing her warrior heritage quickly and when she gendered proving she was a female, she was given the name Witch Legacy, as the one who tended them said “ Witch is self evident, with her tattoo code of wyCH and it is the month of October a perfect time for witches and goblins. The Legacy part well, she does have a few generations behind her.”
Witch Legacy was proud of such a noble name, and as soon as she could fly she spent her time on air, she was quick tempered, and her green eyes flashed sharply when her temper rose.
Many of the male dragons tried to gain her interest in hopes of winning her for a mate. But she refused to mate with any of them.
[ I] ‘ If you can’t catch me you aren’t worthy of me, if you can’t out fight or out fly me what can you teach any children we may have? If you are to mate with me you must prove yourself worthy.’ [/I] Witch scolded and mocked her would be suitors.
Golden Ray felt his heart pound and a deep rumble rise from his throat, ‘ I would …’ he began as he flew closer to her.
Witch turned her neck, snaking it out and snapped at him, ‘ Just because you are a cave born Gold you think that is enough, to win my heart, or have the right to mate with me?’ She dived and spun on wing her body twisting and turning.
Golden Ray bugled with joy, ah if he could only win her, heart he knew the two of them would be true mates, like Akeena and Ariealist or Gimodaptor and Sterling Sunshine. There was something about her saucy, feisty nature that drew him to her.
To prove his worth as a father, Ray brought her food he had killed but she mocked him telling him that she could hunt for herself, she was a warrior and helped guard and protect the cave after all.
Still, inside Witch was flattered by Golden Ray’s devotion, while many of the other males had given up on her as a waste of time, he continued to court her. Patient and determined, yet willing to put up with her temper.
One day the keeper of the cave came in and smiled she’d seen Golden Ray flying often with Witch Legacy, “ I think we ought to try breeding you two, though I’m starting to think Ray isn’t able to give eggs.” She muttered a little ruefully under her breath.
Witch Legacy heard the whisper and she hissed under her breath, she was sure that Golden Ray was quite capable of breeding eggs and it wasn’t long before she proved that fact by laying a single black egg.
“Why Ray you and the Witch seem to like one another, I think we will keep that egg and, my friend you can breed with her again and we’ll see how you two get along.”
Soon after they had an alt black child and gold eggs as well. While not all black eggs were kept the gold eggs being special and in high demand were placed in good homes.
It was some time after that when the one who cared for the cave, and the dragons who lived there decided it would be interesting to do a little experiment, of sorts. “ What I’d like to do, is see how many generations of dragons I can get from one line, and by breeding all the dragons of each type that I can into it. Since I all ready have some offspring from you and your grandchildren it may be wise to use your line - and we will name it after you dear, Witch.”
Golden Ray nodded his head, ‘ I like it! A proud lineage from our children and grandchildren.’ Not to mention he’d get to see so many of their descendants grow up in their home and of course by now he and Witch Legacy were established mates. Golden Ray could not see himself mating with anyone but his lovely black warrior Witch.
But then dark times fell upon the land and the ruler of all dragons set out a decree announcing that all Black or vine dragons could no longer breed with the metallic dragons.
Golden Ray and Witch Legacy roared in protest their anguish and sorrow deep. Neither could think of being a part or mating with another. But trying to mate even with the decree in place meant they refused one another - and they hated that all the more, how could they refuse each other, though they loved each other dearly.
‘Why did the Ruler do this?’ Witch railed the fire in her jade eyes seemed to bode ill for the Ruler if she could get ahold of him but he did have powerful magic of his own.
“ It is because of the alt dragons, too many alt eggs being given by breeding metallic dragons to blacks or vines. I’m sorry loves, we will have to put you with new mates.” The one who cared for them explained.
Witch Legacy got to breed with a white dragon and during that long time she only gave one white egg. Golden Ray though miserable mated with a red dragon named Embrak and he produced two eggs with one breeding a third with a second breeding with her all red eggs. Ray though longed to be with his real mate.
The dragons seemed miserable and inconsolable over the forced separation but after time the Ruler of the land lifted the decree saying he had used his magic and power to make it harder to determine an alt black, or vine egg from a regular egg and the chances of getting an alt would be less now then before.
The care taker of the dragons rushed to the cave with the news. “How bout it Witch, next time you are able to breed would you and Golden Ray like to try again?”
Witch Legacy tossed back her head and roared agreement, she would gladly welcome back her mate.
The first time they mated after the terrible decree that had separated them, Witch Legacy feared that she would refuse him again, she almost held her breath, but she did not rebuke him in any way shape or form, and that night they slept together with, necks, and tails wrapped around each other.
From that time on She and her Gold mate stayed together, the forced separation proving more then anything that they belonged together, and in the times since - yes there had been times when she had not laid eggs - but she was getting older and could not be expected to give an egg every time, they had many children blacks, alt blacks and golds.
Her legacy was alive and well, growing even now and she knew some of her eggs had been distributed to other scrolls where the young dragons were named in honour of her, and that gave her a sense of great pride and accomplishment in and of itself.
‘My legacy, truly lies in my children and in all their descendants. It is wonderful that I have so many of them here to keep me and their father company, Ray and I do make a good team’ She mused and sighed with contentment, happy with her life.
