Orignally by skarx, idea copy-pasted from DC.
This takes place in a world identical to ours, but dragons exist in this place and the humans know of their existence. They are considered savage beasts out for blood that are barely intelligent enough not to kill their own hatchling.
A group of scientists were working behind the public eye on a project to create super soldiers using the DNA of the dragons. It was believed that by mixing both genetic codes together one would gain the power of the dragon; their strength, ability to fly and many other things. At first they needed test subjects so they took animals and started to alter their genetic code using different genes from others species. It started as a game. They tried to recreate creatures only known in myths. Hydras, griffins, hippogriffs, chimeras, name one and they probably tried and eventually succeeded. The first ones were failures of course, but they eventually understood how to do it. A problem remained however. What should they do with these monsters? Without much of a debate they decided to isolate them somewhere no one ever goes anymore because of the events that occurred there. The Bermuda triangle. On one island they built the “cage” meant to keep the beasts confined. Satisfied from their test they now had to test on the humans. They turned their eyes to those who would not be missed; prisoners. They tested on them with different kind of animal DNA. Wolves, foxes, cats, birds, fishes, they even tried insects! While they succeeded in mixing them, the secondary effects were huge. Some were extremely quick to anger; others suddenly took pleasure in pain or could not resist the urge of playing tricks no matter how severe the consequences. On the bright side, they developed powers, which the animal itself didn’t seem to have.
Then came the first dragons’ mixes, on prisoners again. Though even if people did not really care about these prisoners the fact that they were disappearing soon made people curious as to why they were disappearing so quickly. The government trying to silence this refused to let the scientists use anymore prisoners. The scientists then turned their eyes on the homeless and those without any family. Soon though, it went out of hand and normal people started to disappear. Angry citizens started to gather, scared and sad from so many lost. The project was forced to an end for many years. They did try and test from time to time on people they found that could not be traced back and after years of struggle they finally succeeded in perfecting the transformation. While the first dragons’ experiments pretty much all became insane and dangerous, this time the person kept their entire mind.
Meanwhile on the island, it became hell for the guards. More and more experiments of all kinds were breaking the lines and fleeing from the island causing even more destruction and death upon the civilians. The public demanded justice from those who made these monsters. The government decided to push the responsibility on the scientists telling them it was their fault and they had to take care of this matter themselves. Their latest experiments and themselves were isolated on one of the remaining facilities on the island.
