Chapter One: Wake-Up Call
~~~~~~~
"Hey! Play with me!"
Tobias grunted, opening his eyes as something small slammed into his side at just under mach four. "Mmrghh... what?" the earth dragon mumbled, turning over.
Standing not ten inches away from his nose was a tiny pink hatchling, his wings newly grown. The little creature sighed. "Why does everyone always ask me that? I know you heard me the first time!"
Groaning, Tobias rose slowly to his feet. "I wasn't awake the first time," he said, stifling a yawn. "And I can't play with you right now, Kiorie; I'm too tired."
Kiorie made a face. "You're always too tired! If you don't get up and move around, your muscles'll acro... aphro... get too small, and you won't be able to do anything anymore, and you'll wish you'd gotten up and played with me, and..."
During the hatchling's tirade, Tobias had been looking around distractedly. Finally, he found what he was looking for. Turning back around, he stuffed a piece of fruit nearly as big as Kiorie into the hatchling's mouth. "I'll play with you," he rumbled. "But eat something first."
Walking forward, he reached the opening of his cave, and walked out into the hallway. Kiorie fluttered after him, munching on the fruit.
The Honeycomb, as the dragons called it, was a large network of caves and tunnels that went deep into the earth; it was shaped, as its name suggested, a great deal like a beehive. It was the main sleeping quarters of most of the dragons; it mainly housed bachelors and bachelorettes with no family in the cave, as well as small familes.
When a family grew too large for the limited space in the Honeycomb, it usually either claimed as its own somewhere closer to the surface, or asked the earth dragons to create a larger living space for them. There were a few families that had specific areas they were posted, such as those with guardians in them living close to the nursery and hatchery, or the white dragons living in the infirmary, or the water-dwelling dragons living in the underground network of lakes and rivers.
"So what did you have in mind?" asked Tobias absently as they walked by the Girl's Room, a play and exercise area for the female dragons. It's awfully quiet in there... he thought. "And before you ask, no we can't go play in the Girl's Room."
Kiorie chewed thoughtfully on the fruit; juice dripped down his chin. "Hmm... we could go to the Guy's--"
"Not the Guy's Room either. You're still too small to play there; you might get squished."
The pink hatchling looked disappointed. "Well... well... we can go for a walk then!"
Tobias raised an eyeridge. "A walk?"
Kiorie grinned, warming to the idea. "Yeah! We'll get Graysnoon and Gabri and Gestali and Vascerii and go outside! It'll be great!"
Tobias thought for a moment. "I guess... what time is it, anyway?" He was barely awake on his feet.
Kiorie blinked innocently. "Oh, um, well..." His tail flicked uncomfortably. Tobias stared. He gave in. "Five in the morning. Why?"
So that explains it, the earth dragon thought. Then, a rush of panic. "You're supposed to stay in the nursery until eight! Novari's going to kill me!"
Ignoring the hatchling's squeak of protest, he grabbed his scruff in his mouth and ran along the tunnels, following the path he knew would take him to the Guardian's Abode, and the nursery. Hopefully, he would get there before anyone noticed Kiorie was missing; if not, he would probably be scolded for allowing the hatchling to walk around the caves freely during the nursery curfew.
"So... are we still going for a walk?" asked Kiorie nervously.
That's the end of chapter one! I'll continue working on chapter two. Stay tuned, folks!
Chapter Two: A Morning Snack Gone Awry
~~~~~~~
Tobias screeched into the nursery, wincing as one of his feet sent a rock clattering against the wall. He looked around, and would have breathed a sigh of relief if his mouth wasn't full of violently protesting pink hatchling. Good. No one noticed.
Tiptoeing over to the nests where the other four hatchlings lay sleeping, he dropped Kiorie into his own nest. The hatchling gave him a baleful look. "That hurt!" he squeaked (as quietly as possible, not wanting to be punished in the event that one of the guardians woke up).
Despite Kiorie's dearest wishes, however, Tobias did not burst into flames then and there. Instead, he snorted. "You're not supposed to be out of the nursery before eight o'clock. You know that." He looked around curiously. "Speaking of which, how did you get out, anyway? I thought the guardians kept it sealed."
Kiorie shook his head, crossed his front legs over his tiny chest, and tightened his mouth stubbornly. "Uh-uh; it's a secret."
The earth dragon raised an eyeridge, and shrugged. He would talk to Novari about it later. He turned to go.
"I'm hungry!" said Kiorie, without warning. Tobias sighed and turned back to the hatchling.
"You just ate," he said wearily. Kiorie's ears flattened against his head.
"Well, yeah, but I'm a growing dragon! I need to eat a lot!" He pouted.
If Tobias had been capable of doing so, he would have performed an action that humans would call a facepalm. "What do you want?" he sighed. Maybe if he hurried up and got the little tyrant something, he would be left alone to catch up on his sleep.
"Ummm..." The little creature thought for a moment. "Could you get me some strawberries?"
Tobias shrugged. Strawberries weren't so bad. "Alright, but only if they're in stock. If we don't have any, you wait and get your own breakfast like everyone else, okay?"
Kiorie nodded.
The huge green dragon turned and crept out of the nursery, heading for the area where the dragons stored their food.
~~~~~~~
As Tobias slipped into the food storage area, he noticed a glimmer of orange somewhere off in the back. Despite his sleep-deprived state, he wondered who was up and rummaging through the shelves at five in the morning.
Looking from side to side in search of strawberries, he headed toward the spot where he had seen the glimmer.
"Hello?" he called, his voice echoing across the huge room.
After a minute or two, he had almost given up hope and decided to return to his cave when he heard a crash just up ahead. Forcing speed out of his tired limbs, he sprinted up the aisle and turned the corner of one of the shelves, prepared to face whatever awaited him.
Instead of a marauding wolf or bear, he saw his friend and nestmate, Murabi, struggling to her feet. Around her was a pile of spilled food scattered all over the floor.
"Murabi!" he said in shock, rushing over to help her up. "What are you doing here?" He glanced to the side, noticing the stepladder with several broken rungs. So that's what happened, he thought.
The magi shook her head dazedly. "Glad to see you're concerned about my well-being, Tobes," she grunted. "Came in here to get some food for Gestali. And what about you?"
He chuckled. "Same here. I don't think we have any strawberries in stock, though, so I guess Kiorie'll just have to wait." He looked at her foot and winced. "Eek, are you all right? Hold on, stay right here; I'll go get one of the white dragons." He turned and raced back off down the passage, leaving Murabi with one paw raised.
Hmph, she thought in annoyance. He could have at least tried to make me more comfortable. Sighing, she settled down to wait.
~~~~~~~
In the nursery, Kiorie waited and twiddled his claws. He grinned inwardly. He knew there weren't any strawberries in the storage room, and he also knew that the little goose chase would keep the older dragons occupied for a while.
"Psst!"
Kiorie turned to see the gray hatchling, Graysnoon, peeking cautiously from under her eyelids. "Is he gone?"
The pink hatchling nodded again. The other hatchlings immediately dropped all pretenses of sleep and jumped out of their nests, huddling together in the middle of the floor.
"Okay, are we all ready to carry out the plan?" asked the daydream hatchling, whose name was Gestali. The other four hatchlings nodded.
Kiorie grinned and rubbed his tiny paws together. "Okie-dokie! Here's what we're going to do...
~~~~~~~
Oh noes! What are the hatchlings planning? I guess you'll just have to wait for chapter three! Until then,
